Beginning in 1977, Andy Warhol created a series of nude Polaroid portraits, which he described as ‘landscapes.’

The works ultimately became more widely known as "Sex Parts" or “Torsos," the former being more sexually explicit, while the latter more classical in nature.  Warhol photographed a wide array of friends and assistants who worked in The Factory, but he also relied frequently on Victor Hugo, the set designer boyfriend of Halston, to seek out young men from bars in the Meatpacking District in its most decadent red light days. Hugo would lure these subjects back for portrait sittings in The Factory with the artist.

The Polaroids became source material for the screens used to create prints and paintings, in much the same manner as Warhol utilized Polaroids as source materials for his celebrity portraits. This work is very personal and intimate on one hand, while also detached and voyeuristic on the other.

These works come from the Private Collection of James Hedges, the largest private collector of Warhol photography in the world, who famously exhibited a grid of 81 of these works at The Grand Palais in Paris in 2012 garnering enormous critical acclaim in Vogue, Vanity Fair, the Financial Times, and numerous other publications.  The show represented the largest exhibition of this material ever held to-date.
