3 SnapFacts about Warhol's Marilyn:

*Orange Marilyn, Andy Warhol's iconic 1964 image of Marilyn Monroe, broke all records for the artist in 1998 and set a new record as the highest price paid for a Warhol artwork at that time.It was sold at Sotheby's for $17.3 million.

*Warhol was fascinated by Marcel Duchamp’s philosophy of mass-produced art. Warhol wanted to paint like a machine, and create art separate from his effort and emotion. He traced projected images and reproduced them with silkscreens to create a mass-produced look. Warhol named his studio The Factory. He hired many assistants to further separate himself from his art.

*In 1970 Andy Warhol partnered up with Sunday B Morning, a group of Belgian artists, to mass produce more Marilyn screen prints with different colour variations. Warhol’s purpose was for the screen prints to represent his ideas about mass production of art. He decided not to go ahead with the project and left all the negatives and colour numbers with Sunday B Morning and recognised the prints as authentic reproductions in his catalogue raisonne, even signing some of them using the phrase “this is not me. Andy Warhol.” Sunday B Morning still produce Marilyn Monroe prints today.
