Pablo Picasso - Chapeau fleuri, 1937

Pablo Picasso’s captivating “Vollard Suite” series began with a trade. The renowned avant-garde art dealer Ambroise Vollard - for whom the series is named - commissioned the etchings, and in exchange he offered Picasso original works by Cézanne and Renoir. Picasso proceeded to work feverishly over seven years on the neoclassical etchings, eventually completing the set in 1937 much to Vollard's delight. Tragedy then struck when Vollard died suddenly only two years later, combined with the ensuing chaos of World War 2, meant the works did not become available until 1950 when 230 full sets were released.

A rapturous sensuality saturates Vollard Suite, as it did Picasso’s own life. The period in which he produced the Vollard series was a particularly turbulent and pivotal one, the collection reflects this, acting as a visual diary of Picasso’s sensual and artistic fixations, his growing worry over European politics, and his vagarious love life at the time. Marie-Thérèse Walter - with whom he was embroiled in a passionate affair - is particularly present within the series her distinctive features making a recurring feature.

This work comes from a private collection in Italy. The provenance of the piece has been traced back to Anton Giulio Bragaglia, a well-known art dealer in Rome in 1920s and 30s who ran the Casa d'Arte Bragaglia gallery.
