Although it might still be slightly colder than we would like, we cannot contain our excitement that Spring is here. To celebrate the time of year when we get to witness and experience all the wonderful changes in nature, we have selected some of our latest nature-inspired artworks, to really put that spring in your step.
Reduce Speed Now by Nessie Ramm
Nessie Ramm’s brilliant Reduce Speed Now is a print from her series of Road Verge signs. Nessie combines her artistic skill and natural science knowledge to create artworks with a pertinent message – that we need to look after our wildlife. Nessie’s road verge series was prompted when she was surprised to realise that it was on the untouched road verges, rather than out in the fields around her home, where she encountered the most wildflowers. So began Nessie’s campaign to save the road verges of the country and prevent them from being mowed and destroyed. We love how Nessie incorporates the text of the road signs into her artwork, letting them take on a fresh and important meaning in their new context.
You may recognise these beautiful pieces, which Lisa Lloyd released last year and which proved incredibly popular. We are thrilled that Lisa has treated us to a second edition of the Rise series, and that the artworks are now available in two different sizes. Lisa’s practice is fully intertwined with nature, as she uses her extraordinary paper and card design skills to construct the dynamic elements of the natural environment. Lisa’s respect for nature also informs the materials she uses in her art practice, choosing the sustainable route of working with paper and card which would otherwise be thrown out. A fundamental part of Lisa’s process is capturing the perfect photograph of her paper and card three-dimensional artworks. Lisa ‘wants to feel like a wildlife photographer’ when creating the image – capturing the split-second movement of the animal to ensure that they look alive.
Dan Stirling’s mesmerising print Aurora is from his series ‘Great British Summer.’ This bright, joyful depiction of flowers is certainly the most positive piece of the triptych, which explores the demise of nature and the contemporary obsession with mass-produced materials. Looking at these flowers, you would not believe that they have been hand-drawn and painted, as they are meticulously detailed and photorealist. It comes as no surprise that Dan’s process is very painstaking, taking many months to achieve and complete his striking compositions. Dan says of this piece, 'The first of three works - The beauty of nature as it is and as it will become. The story begins and unfolds, as it will...join that journey.' Aurora makes us look forward to seeing and smelling the flowers that will soon be brightening up our gardens and parks.
Hope Springs Eternal by Lene Bladbjerg
Lene Bladbjerg’s vibrant piece Hope Springs Eternal perfectly encapsulates all that is great about spring. There is so much joy in this piece, thanks to the bright yellow background and the focus on the blossom. Lene is a Danish artist now based in London, and her artistic practice is informed by finding joy in everyday life and depicting it on a small scale. Lene often looks to nature for inspiration, explore her collection to discover soaring birds, beautiful butterflies and trees in all their glory.
BACKWATERS PEARL - SMALL by Nadia Attura
BACKWATERS PEARL really gets us in the mood for warmer temperatures and brighter days. It is Inspired by Nadia Attura’s visit to the animal sanctuary La Perle aux Oiseaux in Marrakech, as well as the Greek islands and the tropics. This vintage-inspired artwork depicts an island bursting with colour and bright birds – you can imagine the extraordinary birdsong that you would hear if you were there. Nadia creates her immersive landscape paradises by layering photographs and tactile collage. Nadia feels her best in nature, finding it ‘restorative, energising, calming, soothing, meditative’. This appreciation of nature can easily be detected in her escapist utopias, which grant us access to imaginative scenes we would love to visit.
